Play Station (aka, Super Famicom CD-ROM Adapter) is a cancelled video game accessory that supports CD-ROM for Super Nintendo jointly developed by Nintendo and Sony.

Background[edit | edit source]

It began when Ken Kutaragi, who later became the developer of Play Station (not Nintendo), saw his daughter playing video games on Family Computer and took an interest in the video game business. . At that time, Sony was doing business in consumer electronics and had no know-how about video games. Therefore, Kutaragi provided Nintendo with a chip for Super Famicom's PCM sound source and at the same time promised to develop a CD-ROM adapter dedicated to Super Famicom. At the Consumer Electronics Show in May 1991, the SFC-specific CD-ROM adapter was named "PlayStation," and Sony announced a prototype. But the following month, Nintendo signed a contract with Philips to develop a game for CD-i. As a result, Nintendo's PlayStation development plan was abandoned. However, Kutaragi, who did not give up on the video game business, developed Sony's own PlayStation, which was released in May 1994.
